Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace upset with Arcade Fire over Spider-Man casting

Rocker Laura Jane Grace has attacked Arcade Fire for choosing “The Amazing Spider-Man” star Andrew Garfield over an actual transgender woman for their new “We Exist” video.

The Against Me! singer, who is transgender, was upset by the video for the Canadian group’s gay-rights anthem when she realized a heterosexual actor was playing dress-up, rocking out onstage with the band at the Coachella festival in California.

Garfield shaved his head and wore a wig and a dress in the video.

In a Twitter.com post on Thursday, Grace wrote, “Dear @arcadefire, maybe when making a video for a song called ‘We Exist’ you should get an actual ‘Trans’ actor instead of Spider-Man?”

Early this year, the band released Transgender Dysphoria Blues, its critically acclaimed sixth album and first since lead singer/songwriter Laura Jane Grace came out as transgender in 2012.

On Oct. 10, Grace will follow up Transgender Dysphoria Blues with True Trans, a 10-part AOL web series about the real lives of transgender people across America.

Yes. I'm very excited for "True Trans." The series will show Laura on tour, and at each city, she meets up with trans people and talks about gender. I was on location when they shot an episode in Illinois, and I was really impressed with the team behind the series. It was obvious they had learned so much about trans issues, and it felt very sensitive and respectful. The experience was like Laura herself -- she's a rock star but she's also fun and sweet and humble. She will bring a quality to the show, and you will see a great cross section of trans people.
