Seems like a song about being in limbo, or maybe a dream.
I opened my eyes to sunlight, broke over the marsh. My lungs are filled with sulphur, I was all washed up. ...brain/raining into a gutter. I had no memory of who I was.
500 years I was close to(?) you. 500 years I was lost for you. There's nothing left of me, I can't move on for 500 years.
I followed the cleaner? sidewalks down into the city, The Palm Rats? (this is a company in Naples) ...the telephone wires hanging up above me. I knew that his black eyes were watching on me. I could feel the heat of the flames reaching out for me.
Somewhere in the cemetery, I know my corpse rotting. My heart's paralysed and my chest feels like my ...? Sometimes it feels like I have always been here, Sometimes it feels like I will never leave.

To me it seems like a metaphor for the whole major label era. There is a video where Tom says, "This song is about being a ghost". So I'm going to say it's about that.
