That's a nice way to look at it.
I also think it's quite poignant that David Johansen is only mentioned in the song twice -- once in the first lyric and once in the last.
It's almost like everything inbetween is unrelated to David as an inspiration to Tom or something, I don't know.

Listen to this (it's like five seconds long, sorry to cocktease) but only if you promise to listen with headphones!!! Otherwise you won't hear the bass or Tom harmonising with himself
I'm thinking of editing out the vocals on the acoustic track, but I'm not sure. I like the echo-ish vibes, it makes it sound sorta like Lehigh Acres.

You can hear her in the chorus
So that's where the song gets it's title and, maybe, themes and basis.
