It could be "I saw what they'd written on a bathroom wall" and now I think it's "I was lost in an America that still had hope" but no idea

This song is so dark and almost moody. I love it.

Is it David Johansen from New York Dolls he´s refering to?

I literally cannot think of anybody else who it would be. Also, he 'replaced' Bob Dylan Dream on Black Crosses with this song, which is about a musician, so I think it's about that David Johansen.

I really hope it is, it would be fantastic!
The lyrics is really so great even though I can´t really figure out what it´s all about!

I hope one day we can hear the Goldentone demo version of this song.

I think I read this somewhere on here, but I just came across a wiki article that said Tom did guest vocals on the NYD's song Punishing World. Still have no idea of the meaning of this song. Some insight would be appreciated!

I read ages back on here somewhere that Tom wrote Americans Abroad for NYD but kept it for AM!. That is unrelated but some good trivia, no?

It's a smidge derivative of "A hard rain's a'gonna fall", though.

Don't you love that White Crosses might not have been everyone's cup of tea, but the lyrics (ESPECIALLY this song) are outstanding?

it could be about him wanting to have the spirit of NYD and have the passion they have (i have no idea).

Honestly my favorite B side from the record, up in the top 5 from the entire record.
