I can't believe there's not a topic on them already Anyway, I've liked them since I first heard them and all (nearly 200) of their songs. They have a great social and political message behind their music. I also love how Greg Grafin, their lead singer, teaches evolutionary biology at UCLA. I'm not to much of a fan of New Maps of Hell, but I love that its still recognisable as Bad Religion when put beside stuff off of How Could Hell be Any Worse? That says a lot about a band that can stay true to their sound for 20 plus years.

This is really weird ..but I've never listened to a Bad Religion CD. I've seen them live and everything, but just not listened to an actual record. I reckon I should do so, because I like them live. I know a few people who have taken Greg's class, they say he's an awesome dude. He's kinda cute in a weird way.

I like them so long as Brett Gurewitz is writing.
Some of Grafin's lyrical gymnastics are just that little bit too cumbersome.

I'd suggest you start with Suffer, No Control, and Against the Grain. Most people agree that's their best material.

No Substance and Process of Belief are also great. But I do agree, those are some of their best CDs, and a good place to start.

I just prefer the way Gurewitz crafts a lyric and melody is all.
It wasn't as noticeable back in the days of HCHBAW? but in recent years Graffin's style of stuffing a lyric into a song, come what may, has become more apparent.

I havent really paid too much attaintion into who writes which songs so I guess I haven't noticed that. Could you give me an example of that? If you can't think of one it's fine, I just wanted to hear it myself because I can't really think of a specific instance.

I never got into them until "Process of Belief". That album made me go out and buy "80-85", which is also fantastic.

Off the top of my head if you listen to the Stranger Than Fiction album and compare the title track to say The Handshake, I think you can definitely spot a difference in technique.
But then again who am I to say? Richie Edwards is my lyrical hero and he never bothered his arse with the musical aspect of a song at all.

How could hell be any worse?
NOFX got me into Bad Religion. They're awesome, although most of their songs sound pretty much the same, they're all damn good. Suffer, No Control and Process of Belief are probably my favourite CDs, alongside How Could Hell Be Any Worse? (which is on the 80-85 comp). Stranger Than Fiction is damn good too.

Does anyone else enjoy the Sublime version (or versions? Was there a fast and slow one, or did their version just go on forever?) of "We're Only Gonna Die..."?
It was a great cover.
I hate Sublime though.

Sublime are awesome!
Haha, fair enough, but yeah the Sublime version is ace. There was probably 20 versions, each with at least 15 minutes or random dub jamming at the end.
Damn, I love Sublime so hard. They are completely my summer music.

Correction: I love this "Best Of Sublime" CD I have. But their albums aren't very good at all.
I suppose that this is because they were all done on 4-tracks, and the lead singer died before they really got a chance to shine, which is a tremendous shame.

I love Sublime but I think it might be like a sort of SoCal thing.. A lot of Bradley's lyrics were closely nit with the 1990's Southern California culture and whatnot.

Doesn't stop me lovin' them too, I understand most of the references anyway.
Their self titled CD is probably my favourite album, but 2nd Hand Smoke is so full of sweet ass dub it's great. I was gutted about his death, when I heard a week or so after getting into them. :/
In related news, Desmond Dekker died 10 years TO THE DAY later. Weird, weird, coincidence, for two legends of ska/related genres to die like that.
