| That's pretty lame of you guys. I know the members of this band and it's fucked up and extremely sexist to imply that their popularity has anything to do with Maura. She's very talented and she co-founded the band. She isn't a gimmick so don't talk about her as if she were. You're welcome to have your opinion on Mixtapes' music, but saying crude and sexist shit about a girl as young as her is not cool. Also, they get their shows because they work really fucking hard and write good songs. | |

I won't "beat you up", but it'd be cool if you kept comments like that to yourself. She doesn't play in the band to be objectified like this. I'm serious, these guys are my friends and it's really douchey to come on a website and talk about people in a band you supposedly enjoy in a way that they would find offensive. Also, if it makes any difference to you, Maura and Ryan, the two singers, are a couple. Don't talk about someone's girlfriend like that. She's not some celebrity who has compromised herself in order to be fawned over by horny dudes behind a keyboard. She just graduated from high school, for christ's sake.

Right...And context is irrelevant? Objectifying women is NEVER cool, especially those who take part in a scene that is built on the idea of equality, and thinking otherwise is lame. This is a systemic problem, and if anything, DIY punk ought to be a place where women can create music and be judged by the same criteria as are their male friends/bandmates, instead of being treated as pin-up girls like they are in the rest of the music world. Just saying. It's bad for punk rock. I can't wait to hear the typical DIY-bashing that this post will surely trigger.

No ONE said objectifying women is cool...and I don't think Josh or anyone here on this forum judges her music any different just because she's a female. I think we all judge bands by the music they create and not by what the members in the band look like, I understand if you don't agree with Josh's opinion and I'm not saying that I do but its the internet and the matter of fact is that people will say whatever they want...if you don't like it then learn to ignore it or go out there and do something about it. Arguing over the internet isn't gonna do anything. Like i said Im not saying that Josh or you are right about the topic. But if you really don't like the way things are in the so called 'DIY Punk" then get off the internet and do something about it.

| It's cool, and it's nothing against Josh. I'm sure he's not a misogynist or a dick in any way, just trying to stand up for a person from my local scene, that's all. And to whoever called it "so-called DIY punk", I'm not sure why you're being condescending about this. If you knew anything about the Ohio punk scene, you'd know that Mixtapes are VERY much a DIY band, and in response to telling me to "do something" about it, I'm not sure what that even means. I help put on shows at spaces that have a strict anti-sexist, homophobic, transphobic, classist, racist, etc. policy, so I think that's about as much as I can do...I'm kind of sick of people acting like the Internet in 2011 is wholly separate from real life. "It's the internet, bro" is such a copout. But that's neither here nor there. Point is, people should be cool about this kind of shit. And I think we all agree on that. So, whatever. We all say shit when we're drunk that we didn't think through completely. | |
