In terms of its meaning. I think it's probably regarding Laura's ability to hang out with dudes after her operation. Broadly, it could just be interpreted as how sexist some men are.

I feel it's written for how she felt during her younger ("high school") days. She was a jock and she associated. Fulfilled a stereotypical jock role, but always knew there was something different between her and them.

This song hits close to home, making me think of all the macho situations I've been in where I've felt the social pressure to act like "one the boys". You know, there are all these dudes saying stupid homophobic/sexist/rapey shit and patting each other on the back, and you feel you'd better just play along and keep your thoughts to yourself. You feel that if you tried to call them on their macho bullshit, they'd probably just dismiss you as a feminazi with no sense of humor; after all, they are "only joking".

I'm a cis female, though, so it's kinda obvious that "there will always be a difference between me and you", whereas being a closeted trans woman in a situation like that... It must feel so much worse.

This is just one of a few moments where the record seems in search of community, of acceptance. “Drinking With the Jocks” manages to once again call punk on its shit, as the band has done well plenty of times before, while also digging into the isolation of being left out. The hard-charging song is about wanting to be one of the jocks, wanting—if just for a moment—to be a part of a group that faces no scrutiny, that doesn’t have the social stigmas and pressure that anyone who feels like an outsider might have. But rather than paint the jocks as date-rape morons, as many punk songs do, Grace and company do something different. When Grace screams “look at all that pussy”, it’s not so much mocking jock culture as it sheds light on ways in which it too has its masks, its false macho bullshit that people subscribe to to fit in. In the end, Grace knows she doesn’t fit with this group, but it’s not anyone’s fault, just a difference, and so fitting in must come from somewhere else. In “Transgender Dysphoria Blues” it comes in one person, the acceptance in spending “the whole day along with you”. The record shows personal relationships, our closest ones, as their own kind of community, or at least the sturdiest foundation for it.

I'm mot a huge fan of the song for a few reasons, but scenes this is a topic about the meaning of a song I can't help post the crazy things the media has said. Before posting this: I read over a 100 reviews for the new album. I think the media has put this album on a high pedestal and the weight of Transgender and of meaningful Music on the Band and Laura.
