I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere.. but couldn't find it and i'm still unsure as to what Tom is driving at here. Especially the "Kids pretending to be astronauts, police officers, and firemen." It seems outta place. Help...

hmmm...maybe tom is trying 2 say how futile and pointless music/art has become? im not sure
and the chorus about the kids (2 me) means its not the kids fault 4 wat has happened?

Astronauts, police officers, and firemen are all government employees. He's saying that the joke is on his band and, to an extent, the anarchist scene. No matter how hard they try to affect change and influence the next generation, the kids are still looking up to authority figures and employees of the government.

i had a different interpretation to those lines. i always took it as the kids would rather now emulate the police, and astronauts, and fire men because the music scene is so stagnant now.

I just took it as the kids pretending to be adults, and the adults looking at them thinking how blissful and naive life is in childhood.
