sorta new

so I registered quite some time ago (mid-summer I believe), but I just never really came back after I created the account.

flash forward to now. months later. sitting at home, bored. remembering I have an account here.

here I go:

I'm Dustin. 20 years old, from NYS (grew up in the city and will still hang out with my parents, but for the most part I reside mid-state).

Been an Against Me! fan since 2003, when my friend played me her cover of Baby, I'm an Anarchist. About a year ago was when I became a major fan. I've only been able to see them once though, during the Fat Wreck Tour right after Searching came out.

I play guitar in a punk band called NO. I already tried plugging us in the other bands forum, but always nice to mention it again (plus, I'm on winter break so there isn't much for me to look forward to other than getting together with the guys and playing). The most notable thing about my playing is that I play a left-handed guitar, a fact that my bandmates didn't notice until about a month ago (technically we've only been together since this past January, but you'd imagine that would be enough time to notice your guitarist holds the guitar backwards).

I also host a radio show at my school. The time for next semester is TBA, but my co-host and I decided to call it Folk 'n' Awesome. I got the idea for that from when I was going through a major folk/folk-influenced binge (I blame the fact that Ghost Mice had come to play at my school and I bought their split with AJJ... but other stuff was involved too... I even played some Woodie Guthrie songs on air). We also have a tradition of playing an Against Me! song at the end of every show, most of the time We Laugh at Danger, although we've been known to end with other songs as well (White People for Peace and Cliche Guevara for example).


I've also been really into the Get Up Kids and related projects lately. Mostly Matt Pryor's solo album, but I gave Blackpool Lights a listen and I liked that too.

The vox are hidden by the recording quality. I won't find myself listening to the tracks you have on your page, but if I lived near you, I'd definitely go check out a show.

I guess I should've mentioned that our recording style isn't the smoothest. It doesn't bother me because I kind of enjoy that muddy sound, but I also will sometimes co-write the songs, or at least look over the lyrics when making up chord progressions, so if I ever listen to our songs I know what's being said even if it can't actually be understood.

we decided we don't like doing that 'typical' recording process with each of us going in and recording things individually. it feels too awkward for us, and the one time we tried to do it, it just didn't feel natural either. we're definitely a live band (I've been told by at least three people that we need to be seen live to truly 'get' us.... not bad for a band whose been around for less than a year).

I loved the recording! I grew up with punk rock so I'm used to it, and lo-fi sounds are part of my aesthetic, Like anyone fucking new everything Tom was saying on Shit Stroll the first time they heard it.

haha, thanks. it was one of the first ones we wrote. James (our singer) showed me the lyrics when he and I were freshmen when we first met and had been bugging me to turn it into a song.

in case you were wondering, the lyrics you can't make out go:

"spew all over your face" (the first time)

"puke all over the place" (the second).

it's a pretty gross song, and during a party we played an acoustic version and the reaction we got wasn't too friendly.
(something along the lines of "hey man, I don't wanna hear songs about puking when I go places, why don't you play some Green Day instead?")
