| Basically... I've got no idea. Yes, Tom said it was related to The Disco After The Breakdown and Searching For A Former Clarity, but... I've got no idea what this song means. | |

| I really think it has a lot to do with him appreciating his mother, more than literally wanting to be "born a woman." Its gorgeous. | |

| I think it's more of a stream of consciousness than an effort to portray a specific meaning, but there are messages in here, nonetheless. It's absolutely beautiful musically, too. | |

| Yeah, that sounds right to me... I mean, it's a difficult one to really give a meaning to the whole of it... | |

| i wanted to answer this in a really complicated way, but i'm having a rough week. i understand everything about ocean, though. it's very metaphorical, and the general emotive energy to it just touches me. The Ocean, in my opinion, is probably the best song on New Wave. | |

| Ocean is probably my favorite song off of New Wave. I heard it after living on a ship for a few months and seeing nothing but ocean for days at a time, so I was in love with oceans/bodies of water in general and then I heard this song and was basically just like "YES!" The first line always, without fail, makes my heart swell.
Anyway, I always thought it was about interconnectedness, sort of a "we are all one" ideology. It also makes me feel like there's a lot of longing in life, so I guess it's a pretty bittersweet song to me. It's about all that there is in this world and all that you can have if you know what you want.

I sing it all the time yeah but in front of an audience with homophobic people? Doesn't even matter if they're homophobic, considering it's just in front of an audience in general, most (if not all) of whom you don't know, and could or couldn't be homophobic. Hell, people have issues singing in front of people in general.

Hell, people have issues singing in front of people in general. And we know Tom does, how many of his solo shows has he done with his eyes closed the entire time because he's so nervous?

I was just saying it accuatly does take balls to sing in front of people with lyrics like in The Ocean, even if you arent scared to sing in front of people solo or as a band. Some people are homophobic, some aren't. You never know.

One time I was walking around town listening to The Ocean and right when that "cuuuuuuuurve" played it started pouring rain out of nowhere. It was glorious beyond comprehension.

| my own interpretation of the song: basically, i just think its about the cycles of life. water, being the essence of life, is reffered to in the first verse as God's heaven, reaching everyone, everywhere, in someway. ending with the thirst of our children being quenched.
than in the second verse it is used as the backdrop of toms ideal life. living on the beach with a loving family. again, ending with the mention of children.
as for the line "an ocean in my soul...", you can refer back to the first verse and what he says about heaven. everyone has an ocean in their soul, and everyone has that bit of heaven, that life force. symbolically, placid water.
any truely great song is open to interpretation.
